Read title. Literally what the ? I applied to a job, interview went extremely well and I was told to wait for a little while so they can shop around for other applicants. OK no problem. I wait and wait, give them a followup, nothing. Try calling, no one picks up and no call back.

Eventually, my cousin in law who works there notifies me that I got fired and I never showed up for my 1st day. They hired someone else a week later. I am both mortified and impressed. This could have been a life changer of a job opportunity but I can't help but think I probably dodged a bullet.

sold myfortune. 12h I've never been hired with so little fanfare that I was never notified of a start date. How did they onboard you without tax paperwork or a background check?

OP. 12h Acrobatic_Day7484 That's what makes me so confused. They apparently had a badge and I was added into their personnel list. (LOL) Just picturing a lone empty desk with an unused access badge for my "1st day" almost brings me to tears of laughter.

SeaworthySwarth 3h ● I had a company I was already working for pull something like this once. I'd interviewed for a transfer to another department. I got the job. I signed an offer letter and began to prepare for the transfer, which I'd been warned could take months. Time passed, and I heard nothing. Then, a client of mine reached out and said that an email they sent me must have gotten lost -- they'd sent it to a different email that appeared in the company address book, which was (myname)@(com

I took this as a sign my transfer was going to happen soon. I mentioned it to my manager and he got... weirdly quiet. It turned out the new department had rescinded my offer, but instead of letting me know via a call or on my company email, they'd used one of my personal gmail accounts to inform me, and the email had gone to my spam. I'd actually lost the job three months before I ever found out I lost it. I left that company for a start-up competitor 6 months later.

Test_After • 8h I'm thinking they are using your identity to avoid tax/launder money. They may have "paid" you - with the pay slipping into somewhere untraceable. Or opened a pension plan or a peasant insurance policy or something. Just make sure the IRS and you are on the same page on the numbers.

Acrobatic_Day7484 OP. 8h I actually am so afraid of this now because what if the other person they hired was actually supposed to be me? It's a ridiculous thought but this situation is so absurd that anything is possible.

Zaphod_0707 • 12h Might be worth a 10 minute call to HR. Tell them their system has issues. Simultaneously solve a hole in their system & get what sounds like a nice job.

Acrobatic_Day7484 OP. 11h I don't think I'm getting that job "back" lol but I emailed their HR office directly with exactly what happened. Not sure if anything will come of it but I wonder how many other applicants got destroyed because of that.

QuarticSmile . 11h The hiring manager purposely didn't do the necessary things so that they could fall back on their 2nd choice (main choice). I'm guessing there was some favoritism going on. The extent of this leads me to believe it was no accident. You didn't even sign an acceptance letter.

Acrobatic_Day7484 OP. 11h Man if that's what happened, what an Nepotism reigns eternal.

Varnigma 11h Had similar happened once. Got a job offer, accepted, they said standby for a start date. The next Monday they call me asking why I wasn't at work. Um, you never gave me a start date? Showed up the next day and was there 7 years.

Hollow Voices • 11h Definitely dodged a bullet. What a shitshow. On a slightly related note: When I was in the Air Force one of my supervisors asked if I wanted to do Honor Guard. I said 'not particularly. He said 'cool' and walked off. Two weeks later he asks me why I hadn't showed up for Honor Guard that morning. Like, come on, man.

Grouchyscorpio . 8h My wife was hired and fired from a job she never knew she had. She applied for, and got, a job at a dry cleaner but they never called her to tell her she got the job. She was told she was fired by a friend because she never showed up for her shift.
